After the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona became the city of reference in contemporary architecture and urban planning in Europe. All along the seafront, from the World Trade Centre to the Forum area, new city icons created by Jean Nouvel, Enric Miralles, Frank O. Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Dominique Perrault, Enric Ruiz-Geli, Óscar Tusquets and many more stand side by side. In the late 19th and nearly the whole 20th century, Poblenou used to be an important industrial district with many textile factories. Only recently has this area undergone a radical transformation to become a laboratory for constant innovation, focusing on media, technology and design. These days, massive warehouses house cool lofts, co-working spaces, universities, libraries, trendy cafes and creative cultural projects.
